Rays sign OF Hawpe to minor league deal

08/27/2010 - St. Petersburg, FL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Tampa Bay Rays agreed to terms with outfielder Brad Hawpe on a minor league contract Friday and assigned him to Single-A Charlotte.

The 31-year-old was given his release by the Colorado Rockies -- the only major league club he as played for -- on Thursday.

Hawpe hit seven homers and drove in 37 runs while batting .255 in 88 games for the Rockies this season. In seven seasons with Colorado, he hit .280 with 118 home runs and 464 RBI to go with a .374 on-base percentage and .492 slugging percentage in 816 career games.

In the 2007 campaign, the left-handed hitter posted career highs with 29 homers and 116 RBI over 152 regular season games and helped the Rockies reach the World Series, where they eventually lost to Boston in four games.
